Delta-8 THC is a constituent compound of the cannabis flower. Unlike other cannabinoids such as Delta-9 THC, Delta-8 isn’t directly produced by the plant’s cannabinoid-synthesizing enzymes, which makes it less common. Due to its inconsistent presence, it’s much rarer than many of the 100 other cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

In order to extract Delta-8 THC, growers use specific breeding and molecular isolation tactics. For example, some growers focus on the extraction of carbon dioxide. But the good news is that Delta-8 can be found in hemp as well as standard cannabis plants.

No matter where it comes from, cannabis users say that the end product of Delta-8 produces a high that is calming without taking away their mental faculties (Mind care) with a nice flavor.

First discovered by Israeli Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, Delta-9 THC is the compound we typically attribute to getting high. However, it differs greatly from its close analogue, Delta-8.

Structurally, the difference between the two stems from the location of the carbon bonds within the THC molecule. While both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC contain double bonds in their carbon chain, the critical carbon bond occurs on the eighth carbon chain in Delta-8, whereas it occurs on the ninth carbon chain in Delta-9 THC. This small distinction can lead to drastically different effects.

While Delta-9 THC isn’t the only type of THC with known psychoactive effects, its effects are definitely stronger than those of Delta-8.

Both compounds boast relaxation, sleep, focus, and uplifting properties, but compared to Delta-9 THC, users of Delta-8 THC report an experience that is more lucid and uplifting, yet less anxiety-provoking and less sedating to your mood and brain. In general, the effects of Delta-8 consumption tend to be milder than those of Delta-9 THC.

Additionally, Delta-9 THC turns into cannabinol (CBN) or Delta-8 THC when oxidized, so it comes with a shorter shelf life. The stabler Delta-8 THC, which doesn’t devolve into anything else, will last longer in storage, making it a more reliable compound for medicines than Delta-9.

Delta-8 THC impacts the endocannabinoid system in the body by binding to the CB1 receptors located in the central nervous system, much like Delta-9. However, Delta-8 THC binds to CB2 receptors as well due to its molecular structure, although less is known about the effects of this binding.

Since Delta-8 THC binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, it has the potential to remediate most—if not all—of the psychotropic effects of cannabis while providing the plant’s positive effects through other receptors and neural pathways.

Like the cannabinoid Delta-9, Delta-8 THC brings about many of marijuana’s hallmark effects, just less intensely. Luckily, it seems that while Delta-8 preserves Delta-9’s benefits, it reduces the negative side effects no matter the dosage. Scientists are still studying many anecdotal claims, but the user experience still holds merit. Let’s take a look at each reported effect below.

Pain Relief

Believe it or not, the National Cancer Institute has lauded Delta-8 THC for its “analgesic” (i.e., pain-relieving) properties. It actually might not be much of a stretch; you may know people who use cannabis to ease their pain.

Since a 2018 preclinical study found that Delta-8 THC may help diminish pain and inflammation in mice when applied topically, it’s not that unreasonable to expect similar results in humans from the cannabinoid as well.

Appetite Stimulation

If your appetite has slumped, whether due to chemotherapy or some other reason, Delta-8 may help invigorate it. In 2004, research revealed that after 50 days, rats administered Delta-8 THC demonstrated a 22 percent increase in appetite (shown as food intake), compared with rats who received the placebo.

Anti-Nauseant Effects

Since 1995, research has demonstrated that Delta-8 THC can decrease nausea, much like Delta-9. In young cancer patients over two years old, no one vomited before or 24 hours after cancer treatment if they ingested Delta-8 however, the potency and dosage were not noted.

Anxiety Reduction

Unlike Delta-9, Delta-8 THC actually aims to lower anxiety levels, according to anecdotal reports. With Delta-8, you get all of the tranquility and focus without the panic that usually accompanies them.

When it comes to negative side effects, the impacts of Delta-8 THC are much less known than those of Delta-9. Some people have reported an increased heart rate, even though scientists’ studies in animals have shown the opposite. Discount Pharms will keep an eye on all future experiments involving Delta-8 THC.

Cannabis legalization has been a messy affair across the United States—occurring piece by piece, mostly in the western states like Oregon and Washington. But ever since the Farm Bill became law in 2018, hemp-derived Delta-8 cannabinoids now fall under the same protections as CBD products or to be more precise CBD Kief.

In accordance with the bill’s guidelines, all Delta-8 products contain less than three percent Delta-9 THC.

However, cannabinoid sellers looking to add a Delta-8 product line to their inventory should be aware that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has added Delta-8 to their list of controlled substances in 2020, complicating the compound’s legality.

If you find a Delta-8 product that’s cannabis sativa-based, you should remove it from your cart. But as long as it comes from hemp aroma, Delta-8 should be in the clear within U.S. borders.

The reason is simple: Draw new consumers into the cannabis sphere. You may meet some consumers who want something stronger than CBD or CBG but weaker or light than Delta-9, and for plenty of them Delta-8 should be the perfect solution. Whether they want to use Delta-8 buds to test the waters or to achieve a high more fitting for a casual occasion, you can meet consumers’ needs with these products.

And since hemp-based products have been granted federal protection under the Farm Bill, you may gain a wider clientele by selling Delta-8.
